Curved Doormats and Shiftiness!

28 Nov

Monday

Well, this morning, if all went to plan, the secret letters should have dropped onto the curved doormats inside the igloos of the penguins who were randomly chosen to receive the letters.  I say curved doormats because they sit on the floor, just inside the door, next to the igloo walls so much better than more conventional rectangular doormats.  Needless to say, Eskimo Eddie was the penguin who thought of these first – before he settled here longer term last year, I might add.  I suppose it stands to reason that as a sporadic visitor he would have been more likely to have noticed the finer details of a welcome mat than a penguin who was daily stamping the snow off his or her flippers to go indoors after the day’s tasks were done.

Later in the day, the Penguin Community was full of whispering.  The majority of penguins couldn’t understand why certain penguins had slipped off to the Penguin Palladium.  Perhaps you’re thinking that it shouldn’t be such a surprise to penguins to see other penguins flocking (?) – maybe not the best choice of verb on my part? – to a public building in their own community.  But here’s the thing…each penguin was always unaccompanied.  And he or she always carried something, either a brief case or shopping bag, and in a rather shifty fashion.
